36. Position of Strength Transfers

About This Lesson

Position of Strength Transfers demonstrates how nurses and caregivers can protect their backs while helping others move safely.

Originally produced as part of the Freedom From Back Pain program, the lesson applies the Position of Strength throughout a variety of patient transfers. The basic principles are consistent: keep your back straight and knees bent, use stomach and thigh power, keep the person’s weight close to your body, and pivot rather than twist.

The program demonstrates bed-to-chair and wheelchair transfers, transfer belts, mechanical lifting devices, and techniques for responding when a patient begins to fall.

These principles reinforce the Back Safety Zone and the correct-movement skills taught in The Centered Human Being program.

The larger lesson extends beyond patient transfers: practice the Position of Strength throughout daily activities until strong, safe movement becomes a natural habit.
