RT FAQ

How often can or should I do Relaxation Therapy (RT)?

You can do RT as often as you like, especially in the morning and evening when cortisol levels tend to be elevated.

Should I do RT before I go to sleep at night?

You have undoubtedly heard the advertisement, “Relax and go to sleep.” If you want to rid yourself of sleeping pills and sleepless nights, RT will be of considerable benefit to you.

Can I relax too deeply and not wake up on my own?

No, your body has its own regulatory system. You will not relax too much. You will wake up when you are ready.

Is RT the same as mindfulness?

No, but they both lead to self-regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System through deep breathing, focusing on your bodily state.

How long does it take to respond to RT?

Most people respond well during their first RT session. Almost everyone will relax fully in two or three sessions. You will steadily improve as you practice and develop your Relaxation Skills.

Should I try to do anything during RT?

No, listen to RT and have a pleasant, effortless experience. Let yourself go, and you will relax regardless of whether you are concentrating on the words and procedures of RT. RT is a process of letting go. Enjoy the process of letting yourself go into a Rhythmic Flow experience.

Do I need a teacher or coach to do RT?

No, you can and will progress with each repetitive RT session. Allow your experience to guide you. Learn to trust yourself.

I have been afraid of hypnosis because I don’t like not being in control of myself. Does this relate to RT in any way?

No! RT emphasizes your control over yourself. When you allow yourself to let go and relax, you will.

I often feel guilty when I take time out to relax. What can I do about this?

Remember, you are a more rewarding person to others when you are relaxed and free of discomfort. You have a right to a restful time alone.

Does Relaxation Therapy require self-discipline?

Yes, it may seem strange to you, but you do need to take time out of your busy schedule to do RT. Self-regulation requires a measure of self-discipline.

How long does a typical RT session last?

Each RT session lasts about 20 to 30 minutes. After RT stops, you may continue in a deep state of quiet, depending on how much your body needs additional rest and relaxation.

Will I always need to use the video?

No, you will soon learn how to relax on your own. This is one of the primary reasons for doing RT regularly. Once you learn “how” to relax, you will frequently apply your RT skills in daily, challenging situations.

Does it make any difference if I do RT daily?

Yes, RT is a process that helps you help yourself. Daily Relaxation is essential to your overall care for yourself. If you are more tense or anxious than usual, you may do RT twice or thrice daily. Let your needs for relaxation be your guide. Don’t wait until you are overly stressed.

What are the advantages of using headphones?

Headphones offer three benefits, but these benefits are not considered essential to RT:

  1. They allow you to do RT so others will not hear RT, which is particularly important when you are sleeping with someone who desires a sound-free environment.
  2. Headphones screen out extraneous noises that can disrupt the relaxation process.
  3. Headphones provide you (the main listener) with more “real life” nature sounds and a more complete relaxation response.

Is RT the most important part of the larger Tension Management program?

No, Tension Management involves integrating “Stressor Identification Skills” with “Relaxation Skills.” You want to learn how to effectively resolve ongoing stress and tension. The most important aspect of Tension Management is implementing solutions regarding your particular concerns.
