In The Zone: Making Winning Moments Your Way of Life presents Dr. Mulry’s practical approach to developing greater self-command, Focused Action, and peak performance through mind-body integration.

Originally published in 1995 and later significantly expanded, the In The Zone E-Book grew out of Dr. Mulry’s work training thousands of people. What was once delivered through on-site seminars became a self-learning program you can work through at your own pace.

At the center of the book is a practical process for learning to become Relaxed, Balanced, Flexible, and Focused through physical experience, movement, awareness, and practice.

What Does It Mean To Be In The Zone?

Being In The Zone is not limited to sports. Dr. Mulry describes it as a state of mind and body in which everything flows and you are effortlessly at your best.

At these moments, body and mind work together. You are relaxed rather than tense, balanced, flexible rather than rigid, and focused rather than distracted. The result is more efficient use of energy and greater readiness for effective action.

These principles can apply to sports, music, work, relationships, learning, and other activities throughout everyday life.

Learn With Your Body

One of the most important ideas in In The Zone is that knowing what to do is not enough.

Dr. Mulry asks you to read and do the exercises because physical experience is part of the learning process. Through breathing, relaxation, posture, movement, balance, flexibility, and attention, you begin to experience the principles rather than simply read about them.

As Dr. Mulry explains, when you read the book, you are studying yourself.

The exercises may appear simple, but their value comes primarily through action rather than words. This reflects a central principle of the Mulry Method:

We become what we do.

The Four Core Competencies Of Peak Performers

The In The Zone Ebook develops four interconnected competencies that Dr. Mulry identified as fundamental to high-level performance:

Relaxed Moves

Relaxed Moves develop awareness of unnecessary physical tension and teach more relaxed, energy-efficient ways of using your body. Deep Rhythmic Breathing, Soft Stomach Breathing, and relaxation are introduced as practical skills for developing calm, centered readiness.

You can explore these principles further through Relaxation Therapy.

Power Moves

Power Moves develop effective use of strength and energy. This competency is about more than force. It works together with posture, breathing, balance, and efficient movement.

Elastic Moves

Elastic Moves develop physical and psychological flexibility. Rather than becoming rigid when circumstances change, you learn to move and respond with greater adaptability.

Focused Moves

Focused Moves bring the other competencies together through attention, concentration, and purposeful action. Being relaxed, balanced, and flexible creates a stronger foundation for focusing your energy on what you are doing.

These four competencies form the foundation of In The Zone Skills Training, where you can practice the principles through structured Self-Learning lessons.

From Understanding To Focused Action

In The Zone is not simply about understanding peak performance. The objective is to develop skills you can use. Dr. Mulry’s approach is grounded in learning through experience. You practice a skill, observe what happens, learn from the experience, and adjust what you do next.

This connects directly with Internal Locus of Control: focusing attention on your own actions and the things you can influence rather than trying to control everything around you. Dr. Mulry’s approach was strongly influenced by his mentor and friend, psychologist Julian Rotter, and his Social Learning Theory. The Mulry Method translates these principles into practical skills for Self-Command, Focused Action, and learning through experience.

Making Winning Moments Your Way Of Life

Ultimately, In The Zone is about making peak experiences less dependent on chance. By learning to recognize and practice relaxed, balanced, flexible, and focused ways of responding, you become better prepared to create what Dr. Mulry called winning moments.

The goal is not to remain In The Zone every moment. It is to acquire skills you can call upon when they matter, whether in performance, work, relationships, recreation, or everyday life.

If you’re not In The Zone, where are you?
