Social Learning and Polyvagal Theory: How They Work Together

How Thought, Learning, And The Nervous System Shape Behavior

Social Learning Theory and Polyvagal Theory offer two different but complementary ways of understanding human behavior. Julian Rotter’s Social Learning Theory helps explain how experience shapes what we expect to happen and how those expectations influence our choices. Polyvagal Theory adds another dimension by examining how the nervous system responds to cues associated with safety and threat, often before conscious thought occurs.

The connection becomes especially interesting when we compare two concepts: Expectancy and Neuroception.

Expectancy asks: Based on what I have learned, what do I expect will happen?

Neuroception asks something different: What is my nervous system detecting before I consciously evaluate the situation?

Sometimes these processes agree. Sometimes they do not. Understanding that interaction can help us develop greater awareness, self-regulation, and more purposeful action.

Two Different Ways Of Anticipating What Comes Next

Julian Rotter’s Social Learning Theory explains behavior partly through the relationship between what we expect to happen and how much we value a particular outcome.

Rotter called one of these factors Expectancy (E). Our expectations develop through learning and previous experience. If an action has repeatedly produced a particular result, we become more likely to expect a similar result in the future.

But conscious expectations are not the only processes influencing behavior.

The nervous system continuously responds to information from within the body and the surrounding environment. Polyvagal Theory provides a framework for considering how these physiological responses can affect emotion, attention, social engagement, and behavior.

This connection between Social Learning and Polyvagal Theory highlights an important mind-body relationship: what we have learned to expect and what our nervous system appears to anticipate can influence one another.

Expectancy In Social Learning Theory

In Rotter’s Social Learning Theory, Expectancy refers to a person’s prediction that a particular behavior will lead to a particular outcome within a given situation.

These expectations do not appear from nowhere. We learn them.

Success can strengthen an expectation. Failure can weaken it. New experiences can modify what we previously believed. The psychological situation also matters because the same person may have very different expectations under different circumstances.

This is one reason Rotter’s theory is so useful for self-learning. Instead of assuming behavior reflects a fixed personality trait, we can examine the experiences, expectations, values, and situations influencing what we actually do.

Our expectations can also be inaccurate.

Past experiences may lead us to anticipate failure when success is possible. Conversely, previous success may lead us to expect a positive outcome even when circumstances have changed.

Learning to examine our expectations gives us an opportunity to make better-informed choices rather than simply repeating established patterns.

Neuroception In Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, approaches behavior from another direction.

A central concept is neuroception, a term Porges uses to describe the nervous system’s detection of cues associated with safety, danger, or threat without requiring conscious awareness.

This helps explain why the body may react before we have consciously decided what a situation means.

You may intellectually believe that everything is fine while noticing increased tension, changes in breathing, or a sense of uneasiness. In another situation, you may feel comfortable and engaged without consciously analyzing why.

These physiological responses provide information, but they are not necessarily infallible judgments about reality. Previous experiences, context, and current physiological state can all influence how we respond.

The goal is therefore not to automatically obey every physical sensation. It is to become more aware of the interaction between physiological responses, conscious thought, experience, and the situation itself.

When Expectancy And Neuroception Agree

Expectancy and neuroception can reinforce each other.

Imagine entering a familiar situation where previous experiences have consistently been positive. You expect things to go well, and your body remains relaxed and receptive.

Your learned expectations and physiological state are pointing in a similar direction.

The opposite can also occur. Previous experiences may give you good reason to expect difficulty while your body becomes increasingly tense or alert. Again, thought and physiological response are providing compatible information.

When these processes agree, decisions may feel relatively straightforward.

The more challenging situations occur when they conflict.

When What You Think And What You Feel Conflict

Suppose you consciously expect someone to be trustworthy, yet something about the interaction produces persistent uneasiness.

Which response should you believe?

The Mulry Method does not require choosing rational thought over bodily awareness or bodily awareness over rational thought. Instead, the conflict itself becomes useful information.

You can slow down, observe what is happening, gather additional information, and reconsider your expectations.

The reverse is also possible. Your body may react strongly to a situation even though experience and careful evaluation indicate that the situation is reasonably safe. Rather than automatically avoiding it, you can recognize the physiological response and gradually develop new experiences that may change both your expectations and your response.

This is where self-learning becomes particularly important.

We can learn from what we think, what we feel, what we do, and what happens next.

Internal Locus Of Control And Purposeful Action

The interaction between Expectancy and Neuroception also provides another way to understand an Internal Locus of Control.

Internal control does not mean believing you can control everything that happens. It means recognizing the role your own choices, actions, skills, and learning can play in influencing what happens next.

When thought and physiological responses conflict, an internal orientation encourages purposeful action rather than simply surrendering to either impulse or circumstance.

You can ask:

What am I expecting?

What am I feeling?

What have previous experiences taught me?

What information am I missing?

What can I actually do next?

These questions shift attention toward the part of the situation where you have meaningful influence.

Connecting Mind And Body Through Positive PERFORMANCE Psychology

Dr. Ray Mulry’s work emphasized this relationship between mental and physical performance long before the Mulry Method incorporated Polyvagal Theory as an additional framework for understanding it.

Positive PERFORMANCE Psychology does not treat thinking and physical action as separate processes. It focuses on developing skills that allow the mind and body to work together more effectively.

Dr. Mulry organized these skills around four areas:

Relaxation affects movement. Breathing affects tension. Posture affects performance. Attention influences action. Experience then provides new information from which we continue learning.

This creates a practical connection between Social Learning Theory and the physiological processes discussed in Polyvagal Theory.

Rather than merely understanding these ideas intellectually, we can practice skills that change what we experience and provide new opportunities for learning.

Social Learning Theory reminds us that experience influences expectation and future behavior. Polyvagal Theory draws attention to physiological processes that participate in how we respond to our environment.

Together, Social Learning and Polyvagal Theory provide a useful way to examine the relationship between what we think, what we feel, and what we do.

But awareness alone does not create change.

New experiences come from action. Those experiences can affect our expectations, our confidence, our skills, and how we respond when similar situations arise again.

By learning to recognize our expectations, notice our physiological responses, evaluate the situation, and take purposeful action, we create new experiences from which further learning can occur.
