For decades, Dr. Ray Mulry understood that Relaxation Therapy could calm the nervous system, reduce tension, and restore balance. Years later, researchers developed a scientific framework that helped explain one of the important physiological processes involved in why it worked so well.
That framework came through Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges. This model describes how the autonomic nervous system influences safety, connection, and emotional states. It also helps explain how we respond to the world around us. It provides an important link between the mind and body by explaining how physiological states influence thoughts, feelings, and behavior.
The Mulry Method is built on Social Learning Theory, developed by Dr. Julian Rotter. Through his personal and professional relationship with Rotter, Dr. Mulry applied these principles to understanding how expectations, experiences, and interpretation influence behavior.
Social Learning Theory provides the psychological foundation for personal growth and self-care. It explains how people learn, adapt, and develop a greater sense of control through experience and purposeful action.

One of the key concepts in Polyvagal Theory is neuroception, the nervous system’s automatic process of evaluating safety and threat.
Before we consciously analyze a situation, our nervous system is already helping shape how we feel and respond. A sense of safety can support calmness, connection, and clearer thinking. A perceived threat can activate protective responses that make relaxation, focus, and effective decision-making more difficult.
Understanding this process helps explain why changing our physiological state matters. It can improve our ability to learn skills, interpret situations, and respond with greater balance.
