Freedom From Back Pain grew from Dr. Reaume Carroll Mulry’s own experience with back pain and his belief that people needed to learn how to participate actively in caring for their backs.
Rooted in work he began in 1976, Freedom From Back Pain developed over years of clinical practice, teaching, and personal experience. Rather than focusing only on what to do when pain occurs, Dr. Mulry emphasized education, awareness, relaxation, correct movement, flexibility, strength, and everyday activity.
At the center of the approach was a simple principle: you must learn to care for your own back.
Dr. Mulry’s experience with back pain began at age 26 while completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Princeton. He developed severe back pain that eventually required surgery. Afterward, he discovered that no one had taught him how to move, stretch, or protect his back. For six years, he lived with fear of reinjury.
That changed when a physician asked him a simple question: “Has anyone talked to you about your back pain?”
The question started a process of learning and discovery. Dr. Mulry began walking, studying movement, and developing new skills through yoga, massage, martial arts, and other disciplines.
His experience convinced him that treating a back problem was only part of the solution. People also needed to understand their backs and learn practical skills they could use for themselves.
As a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Mulry brought this emphasis on education, awareness, and Self-Learning into his professional work.
The roots of Freedom From Back Pain reach back to Dr. Mulry’s work in Tension Management and Relaxation beginning in 1976.
Relaxation taught people to become more aware of physical tension and learn how to release it. As his work developed, Dr. Mulry combined relaxation with principles of posture, correct movement, flexibility, strengthening, and physical activity.
He later collaborated with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Arthur White and physical therapist Bill Mattmiller to develop The Back School and The Portable Back School. This work brought practical back education to healthcare professionals and patients.
Over time, these ideas developed into a broader approach to Backcare that emphasized education and prevention alongside treatment.
Dr. Mulry eventually brought these principles together in the Freedom From Back Pain programs.
The programs taught several ideas that became central to his later work, including the Position of Comfort, Relaxation Therapy and stomach breathing, the Position of Strength, correct movement, stretching, strengthening, and recreational activity.
But the individual techniques were not the final goal. Dr. Mulry wanted people to integrate them into how they lived.
Backcare was something to practice while sitting, standing, reaching, lifting, working, walking, exercising, and participating in recreation. Through repetition, the skills could become increasingly natural rather than something you had to consciously remember each time you moved.
The principles developed through Dr. Mulry’s Backcare work did not end with Freedom From Back Pain.
Relaxation, breathing, balance, centeredness, correct movement, flexibility, strength, and awareness later became integrated into In The Zone Skills Training.
The training develops the four core In The Zone Peak Performance Skills: Relaxed Moves, Power Moves, Elastic Moves, and Focused Moves.
This progression shows how skills Dr. Mulry taught for relaxation, Backcare, and correct movement became part of his broader approach to developing a full-body attitude for everyday life and peak performance.
For Dr. Mulry, Freedom From Back Pain was ultimately about more than responding to pain. It was about learning what you could do to care for yourself.
Knowledge alone was not enough. The skills had to be practiced and put into action until relaxation, correct movement, flexibility, strength, and activity became increasingly natural parts of everyday life.
Dr. Mulry ended Freedom From Back Pain by emphasizing that there was little luck involved. Learning to care for your back requires education, practice, and action.
“It is up to you. You can do it.”
That, he said, is the essence of Freedom From Back Pain.
