Dr. Mulry’s Approach To Back Health And Self-Care

The Follow-Up Program, released in 1991, continues Dr. Reaume Carroll Mulry’s Freedom From Back Pain program through 10 optional sessions designed to reinforce the skills introduced in The Centered Human Being.

Drawing from his own experience with back problems, Dr. Mulry emphasizes a central principle of the program: you must learn to care for your own back. The goal is not simply temporary relief, but developing the awareness, movement skills, flexibility, strength, and habits needed to protect your back in everyday life.

Throughout the sessions, Dr. Mulry reviews and expands several core Backcare skills:

  • Position of Comfort to reduce pressure and unnecessary tension in the back
  • Relaxation Therapy and stomach breathing to develop greater awareness of tension and relaxation
  • Position of Strength with the back straight and knees bent to create a stronger position for movement
  • Back Safety Zone to recognize safer ranges of movement and avoid positions that place unnecessary stress on the back
  • Stretching Exercises to develop flexibility and muscle balance
  • Strengthening Exercises to improve the muscles that support correct movement and back function
  • Correct Movement to bring these principles into bending, lifting, exercise, work, and everyday activity

The sessions are designed for continued practice. Dr. Mulry encourages you to become more aware of how you move, recognize positions of strength and weakness, and make correct movement part of daily life.

The Follow-Up Program reinforces one of the central ideas running throughout Dr. Mulry’s Backcare work: caring for your back is an ongoing process of self-care, awareness, and learning through experience.
